Rev Ilze Kuplens-Ewart, “Mācītāja Ilze”, has been our pastor since 1997. Before coming to us her ministry had been in Germany, chiefly at the Latvian High School in Muenster. She gained her MA in Theology from the University of Oxford and was ordained and had her first pastoral charge in the UK. Ilze is married to a United Church minister, Ron Ewart, who is Executive Director of Toronto United Church Council. They have three adult children, and two grandchildren.
In addition to being pastor at St Andrew’s, Ilze has filled a number of significant leadership roles both in the Latvian Lutheran Church, and the ELCIC.
Tending to her relationship with God in her spiritual life is the basis for Ilze’s work. It is where she finds the strength to meet the challenges of ministry in a large congregation, and the creative energy to explore where the Spirit might be leading her as pastor of St Andrew’s.
She also loves her garden, her exuberantly affectionate Springer Spaniel, Ryder, and spending time in Sidrabene, the congregation’s country home.
Ilze celebrates Sabbath rest on Mondays. Please call her on her cell phone if you have a pastoral emergency.
