Confirmation
Preparation for confirmation, or "Affirmation of Baptism" as it is better known today, is a two year process. We begin at the end of September and go through to June meeting approximately twice a month. The confirmation service is in May, usually either Pentecost or Trinity Sunday. Confirmation on these days reflects the meaning of the days as commemorating the foundation of the church by God’s Spirit, and God’s action in our lives.
We have found the old Latvian practice of confirming young people at between 16 and 18 years of age to be a very helpful. Conversations with mature young people help them anchor their lives and their understanding of the world in the message of the Gospel. It is a powerful foundation on which they can build their lives.
The first year group is led by Līga Miklašēvica, and the pastor leads the second-year group.
Confirmation programme
Our foundational materials are the Bible (Lutheran Study Bible) and the “Here we Stand” student work book with other materials as necessary. We work hard to take away some of the sense of strangeness around reading the Bible so that our students can see it speaks to them, and to their world. During the first year we focus on the Old Testament, but in the second year, on the New Testament. We also get to know the basis of what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a Christian.
Building on the principle: "love is experienced more in deeds than words" our confirmands take part in volunteer activities. Parents are warmly welcomed at these.
